There is something mighty comforting about a dessert that asks so little of you and still comes out tasting like you fussed all afternoon. This simple baked pear dessert is the kind of old-fashioned treat that feels just right for Grandparents Day, when the best dishes are often the plainest ones made with care. Roasting whole unpeeled pears lets their natural sweetness deepen in the oven, and with just a few pantry staples, you get a warm, spoonable dessert that feels both thrifty and special.

Serve these baked pears warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a dollop of whipped cream, or a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt if you want something a little lighter. They also go nicely alongside pound cake, butter cookies, or a small wedge of sharp cheddar if you enjoy that sweet-and-savory Midwestern touch. A cup of coffee, hot tea, or even a glass of cold milk makes a fine partner.

Ingredients

4 raw unpeeled whole pears

1/2 cup brown sugar
4 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

1. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Set 4 whole unpeeled pears in an oven-safe metal roasting pan, leaving a little room around each one.

2. Sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon evenly over the pears, then place the butter in small pieces around and over them.

3. Roast for 35 to 45 minutes, spooning some of the melted butter and sugary juices over the pears once or twice during baking, until the pears are tender when pierced and the pan juices are bubbling.

4. Let the pears rest for 5 to 10 minutes, then serve warm with plenty of the syrupy pan juices spooned over the top.

Variations & Tips

Softer pears: If your pears are especially firm, cover the roasting pan loosely with foil for the first 20 minutes of baking, then uncover so the juices can thicken a bit at the end.

Sweeter finish: For a more syrupy dessert, add an extra spoonful or two of brown sugar during the last 10 minutes of roasting. The juices in the pan will turn richer and more spoonable.

Serving it pretty: Stand each pear upright in a shallow bowl and spoon the warm spiced sauce around it. A small scoop of vanilla ice cream beside it makes this humble dessert look company-ready.

Make it your own: A pinch of nutmeg or a splash of vanilla would be lovely if you do not mind stepping past the four-ingredient promise. Even so, the plain version is awfully good just as it is.
