These little pinwheel appetizers are the sort of party bite that feels straight out of a church basement gathering, a holiday open house, or a living room full of folding chairs and laughter. With just four ingredients, they come together with very little fuss, yet they bake up buttery, crisp, and mighty hard to leave alone. Recipes like this earned their place in Midwestern kitchens for good reason: they stretch simple store-bought ingredients into something warm, savory, and special enough to set out for company.

Serve these pinwheels warm on a platter with a dish of grainy mustard, ranch dip, or a little marinara on the side if you like. They fit right in with relish trays, deviled eggs, cheese cubes, and a pot of coffee for afternoon guests, but they also pair nicely with soup, a green salad, or a crock of chili if you want to make them part of a larger meal.

Ingredients

1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed

4 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 cup finely chopped deli ham
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Lightly flour your work surface and unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet.

2. Spread the softened cream cheese evenly over the pastry, leaving a small border around the edges. Sprinkle the chopped ham and shredded cheddar evenly over the cream cheese.

3. Starting from one long side, roll the pastry up tightly into a log. If it feels very soft, chill the log for 10 to 15 minutes to make slicing easier.

4. Slice the log into pieces about 1/2 inch thick and place them cut-side down on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one.

5. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the pinwheels are puffed and deeply golden. Let them cool for a few minutes before serving warm.

Variations & Tips

Turkey Swap: If you have leftover turkey or deli turkey on hand, use that in place of the ham for a milder flavor. A pinch of black pepper mixed into the cream cheese is nice here too.

Cheese Change: Swiss, Monterey Jack, or pepper jack all work well in place of cheddar. Just be sure to shred it fairly fine so the pinwheels slice neatly and bake evenly.

Make-Ahead Tip: You can roll the filled pastry into a log and chill it several hours ahead of time. When guests are on the way, simply slice and bake, and your kitchen will smell like you have been fussing all day.

Keep Them Crisp: Serve these soon after baking for the flakiest texture. If you need to rewarm them, a few minutes in a 350°F oven will freshen them up better than the microwave.
