When I need a dinner that feels like I tried harder than I actually did, this 4-ingredient oven chicken is one of my favorite back-pocket meals. You simply add raw chicken drumsticks right to the baking dish with a few pantry staples, and the oven does the heavy lifting. It is the kind of practical recipe that works well on a busy weeknight, but still comes out savory, sticky, and satisfying enough to put on repeat.

This chicken is especially good with easy sides that can soak up the extra sauce, like white rice, mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or roasted vegetables. If I am trying to keep dinner really simple, I usually add a green salad or steamed broccoli on the side, and for a more casual family meal, it also pairs nicely with baked beans, corn, or warm dinner rolls.

4-Ingredient Oven Chicken Drumsticks

Finished glazed chicken drumsticks in a ceramic baking dish

Ingredients

8 chicken drumsticks

1 cup barbecue sauce
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 teaspoons garlic powder

Directions

1. Preheat your oven to 400°F and lightly grease a ceramic baking dish large enough to hold the drumsticks in a single layer.

2. Arrange the raw chicken drumsticks in the baking dish. Pour the barbecue sauce and soy sauce over the top, then sprinkle with the garlic powder.

3. Turn the drumsticks a few times in the sauce so they are well coated, then bake uncovered for 35 minutes.

4. Carefully remove the dish from the oven and spoon some of the sauce over the drumsticks. Flip them if you want even more color and coating, then return the dish to the oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked and reaches 165°F internally.

5. Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving, then spoon the thickened sauce from the dish over the top.

Variations & Tips

Sweeter glaze: If your family likes a sweeter baked chicken, use a honey barbecue sauce. It gives the drumsticks a stickier finish and a little extra caramelization in the oven.

Add a little heat: Stir a pinch of red pepper flakes or a small spoonful of hot sauce into the glaze if you want a sweet-savory-spicy version. It is an easy way to change the flavor without adding extra work.

Use thighs or wings: This same simple sauce works well with bone-in chicken thighs or wings too. Just adjust the cooking time as needed and always check that the chicken is fully cooked before serving.

Line the baking dish: If you want easier cleanup after a long workday, line the dish with foil before adding the chicken. The sauce can get pretty sticky as it bakes.

Meal prep tip: You can mix the sauce ingredients right in the baking dish in the morning, add the chicken when you are ready to cook, and keep the rest of dinner simple with rice or veggies prepped ahead of time.
