Every fall, I notice the same thing in our house: the air starts feeling different before the thermostat settings really change. It is not summer-sticky anymore, but it is also not crisp and dry yet. Our guest bedroom, which sits on the quieter side of the house and does not get a ton of daily traffic, always seems to hold onto that slightly closed-up feeling. So this year, I decided to stop guessing and run a small dehumidifier in that room for 14 straight days, set to 45%, just to see what would actually happen.
I tracked the humidity, paid attention to how the room smelled and felt, monitored how often the tank filled, and noticed a few unexpected side effects too. If you have a spare room, a basement-adjacent bedroom, or any space that tends to feel stale as the seasons shift, this kind of real-life test can tell you a lot. Here is exactly what I observed, what improved, what did not, and whether I think 45% is a setting worth using in early fall.
1. The starting conditions in the room
The guest bedroom is about 11 by 12 feet, with an 8-foot ceiling, so roughly 1,050 cubic feet of air. It has one standard window, a closet, carpet, and a queen bed with a fabric headboard, which I think matters because soft furnishings seem to hang onto moisture and odors more than hard surfaces do. The room is on our main level, but it shares a wall with a bathroom and sits above a part of the house that tends to run cooler.
Before I started, I put a small digital hygrometer on the dresser and let it sit for a full day. Indoor humidity hovered between 56% and 61%, with the temperature sitting around 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. That is not alarmingly high, but it is definitely humid enough to make a room feel a little heavy, especially one that does not get opened and aired out every day.
2. Why I chose 45% instead of a lower setting
I picked 45% because it seemed like the sweet spot between comfort and overdoing it. In my experience, once indoor humidity dips much below 40%, I start noticing dry skin, a scratchy throat in the morning, and that static-electricity feeling in blankets and sweaters. On the other hand, anything above 50% in a less-used room can leave the air feeling faintly musty, even when the room looks perfectly clean.
Forty-five percent felt practical for early fall. It is low enough to discourage that damp, stale feel, but not so aggressive that the room starts feeling artificially dry. If you are trying this in a guest room that is only used occasionally, I think 45% is a very reasonable starting point.
3. The dehumidifier setup I used
I used a compact room dehumidifier sized for a small bedroom, placed about 8 inches away from the wall near one corner of the room. I kept the bedroom door mostly closed, which made the test more realistic for how we actually use the space. The curtains stayed open during the day, closed at night, and the HVAC system ran normally throughout the test.
I emptied the tank manually rather than using a drain hose, mostly because I wanted to know how much water it was actually collecting. The tank filled faster than I expected at the beginning. In the first 24 hours, it collected close to 3 cups of water. By the end of the second day, I had emptied it again. That told me there was definitely extra moisture hanging around in the room and probably in the carpet, bedding, and overall air in that part of the house.
5. The room smelled fresher by day 3
This was honestly the result I was hoping for most. The guest bedroom never smelled bad, exactly, but it had that “closed room” smell that is hard to describe unless you know it. It is a mix of fabric, still air, and just a trace of moisture. By the third day, that was noticeably reduced.
When I walked in after work, the room smelled more neutral. Clean, but not fragranced. I had not changed detergent, washed the bedding, or used an air freshener during the test, so I am comfortable saying the difference came from pulling moisture out of the space. That alone made the room feel better maintained.
6. The air felt warmer even though the thermostat barely changed
This surprised me a little. The actual room temperature only shifted by about 1 degree, usually between 69 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but the room felt more comfortable once the humidity dropped. It is the same reason 72 degrees can feel very different in August than it does in October.
Less moisture in the air made the room feel less clammy, especially in the evening. If you have overnight guests, I think this matters more than people realize. A guest room that feels dry and neutral tends to read as cleaner and more comfortable, even if nothing else in the room changes.
7. The machine settled into a predictable rhythm after day 4
Once the room reached 45%, the dehumidifier no longer ran nonstop. It cycled on periodically, especially overnight and in the early morning. During the middle stretch of the 14-day test, it collected much less water than it had at the beginning, usually around 1 to 1 1/2 cups per day.
That pattern told me the machine was no longer battling built-up moisture. It was just maintaining the target level as outdoor conditions shifted. We had a couple of damp, rainy fall days during the test, and on those days it kicked on more often, which made sense. The room humidity wanted to creep back toward 48% to 50% without help.
8. It did help with that slight window condensation issue
Early in fall, I sometimes notice a faint bit of morning condensation at the lower corner of the guest room window, especially after a cool night. It is never dramatic, but enough to make me think about long-term moisture. During the 14 days with the dehumidifier running, that almost disappeared.
I still saw a tiny trace one morning after a temperature drop, but it was less than usual and dried faster. That is a pretty good sign that lowering the room humidity had a measurable effect on how moisture behaved on cooler surfaces. If you are trying to protect window trim, sills, or curtains, this can be a real benefit.
9. The closet benefited more than I expected
The guest room closet is not huge, but it is one of those spots where air does not circulate much unless the door is left open. 10. Noise was the biggest downside for me
I work from home several days a week, and while the guest room is not my office, I could still hear the machine cycling from the hallway. If I had someone sleeping in that room, I would probably run it during the day and turn it off at night unless they are comfortable with white noise.

11. The tank filling rate told me a lot about the room

This was probably the most useful practical lesson for me: a room can feel “mostly okay” and still be humid enough to benefit from dehumidification. You do not need visible mold, damp walls, or a basement smell for humidity to be affecting comfort.
12. My bedding and soft surfaces felt less heavy
This one sounds a little odd until you experience it, but the comforter, throw pillows, and even the upholstered headboard felt less cool and dense after several days. Not dry in a brittle way, just less moisture-laden. The bed felt more like it does in the middle of winter, when fabrics stay crisp and airy.
As someone who cares maybe a little too much about making a guest room welcoming, I really noticed this. If you want sheets and blankets to feel freshly made longer, keeping the room closer to 45% seems to help.
13. Energy use was not outrageous, but I would not run it blindly forever
I did not put it on a dedicated power monitor for this test, so I cannot give you an exact kilowatt-hour number from my own setup, but a small compressor-style dehumidifier typically draws somewhere around 200 to 350 watts while actively running. Since mine ran hardest during the first 2 days and then cycled, I am not worried about a short seasonal reset like this.
That said, I would not run it 24/7 all season in a room that can naturally stay around 45% to 50% once the weather turns cooler. For me, this felt most useful as a transition-season tool. A hygrometer is worth the $10 to $20 because it keeps you from guessing and overusing the machine.
14. What did not change
The dehumidifier did not magically make the room brighter, cleaner, or dust-free. I still needed to dust the dresser, vacuum the carpet, and wash the bedding on the usual schedule. It also did not solve airflow issues created by a mostly closed door and limited HVAC circulation.
In other words, lowering humidity improved comfort and freshness, but it did not replace normal room maintenance. I think that is important because sometimes we expect one appliance to fix several unrelated issues. This was helpful, not miraculous.
15. My final verdict after 14 days
At the end of the experiment, I would absolutely say the 45% setting worked well for a guest bedroom as fall arrived. The room smelled less stale, felt more comfortable, had less window condensation, and maintained a more cared-for feel overall. The biggest improvements happened fast, within the first 2 to 4 days, and after that the machine mostly maintained the environment rather than dramatically changing it.
If your spare bedroom tends to feel shut up, a little damp, or just not as fresh as the rest of the house, I think this is worth trying. Personally, I would use the same setup again at the start of fall for a few days at a time, then check the hygrometer and adjust. It was one of those small home experiments that ended up making the room feel noticeably better without any major expense or renovation.
