Every September, when the air turns cool here in the Midwest but the ground is still holding summer moisture, my basement starts telling on itself. The concrete smells a little earthier, the dehumidifier runs longer, and the window wells collect that faint clammy feeling that seems to sneak in before you fully notice it. This year, instead of just wiping condensation and grumbling about it, I tried a small experiment: I applied a cinnamon oil paste to my basement window seals every other day for 14 days and kept notes on what changed.

I had no illusion that it would repair failed seals or replace proper mold remediation. On damp mornings after rain, especially when overnight temperatures dropped into the upper 40s°F and basement humidity sat around 67%, I still saw moisture beading in the lower corners.
If anything, the biggest factor was whether I ran my dehumidifier. When I set it to 50% and emptied the bucket regularly, the windows stayed noticeably drier. When I let humidity drift above 60%, moisture returned. The paste did not change that basic relationship. So if someone is hoping cinnamon oil will solve the physics of cool glass meeting humid air, it won’t.
9. What happened to odor and that “basement smell”
This is where the experiment had its strongest apparent effect, though it came with an asterisk. The stale odor right at the window line was less noticeable throughout the test. On day 1, before I started, I rated the musty smell a 6 out of 10 standing directly by the windows. On most treatment mornings, it was closer to a 2 or 3 out of 10.
But part of that was simple masking. Cinnamon has an assertive scent, and it doesn’t quietly neutralize a room. It announces itself. Once I wiped the paste away thoroughly and 24 hours passed, a little of the original basement odor started to return. So yes, the smell improved, but not in a way I’d call a permanent fix. It was more like putting a fragrant shawl over the problem while also cleaning the area more often.
10. Whether I saw any mold or mildew changes
I did not see active mold growth appear or disappear during the 14 days. To be fair, I wasn’t starting with fuzzy black patches or visible colonies. If you already have visible mold, this would not be my recommendation. Mold on porous materials, recurring growth, or persistent water intrusion is a bigger issue than a scented paste can address. 11. The mess factor, cleanup, and practicality
Cleanup was manageable but slightly annoying. The paste dried to a crumbly residue in thinner spots and stayed tackier in thicker corners. If I rushed the wipe-down, I left behind a dusty film that caught light on the vinyl frame. On day 7, I had to go back with a second damp cloth because the residue settled into a seam and looked dingy.

This was probably my biggest takeaway. Cinnamon essential oil is not a harmless little spice cloud once it’s concentrated in oil form. It can irritate skin, eyes, and airways, and it may not play nicely with pets, children, or sensitive adults. I wore nitrile gloves because even a tiny drop on skin can feel hot or irritating.
I also would not use it on every seal material without testing first. Vinyl, painted trim, silicone, latex caulk, rubber gaskets, and old adhesives can all react differently. If someone insists on trying it, I’d strongly suggest testing a hidden 1-inch section first and waiting 48 hours. In my case, the slight change in that older caulk line was enough to make me cautious.
13. What actually made the biggest difference
The practical improvements came from three plain, unglamorous things. First, I ran my dehumidifier more consistently and kept basement humidity between 48% and 52%. Second, I wiped condensation as soon as I saw it instead of letting the moisture sit overnight. Third, I checked the exterior window wells for leaf litter and made sure rainwater wasn’t hanging around the foundation edge.
Those steps produced more noticeable results than the paste. Once I got humidity under control for three straight days, the window corners stayed drier and the basement smelled cleaner overall. It did not significantly reduce condensation, it created some residue, and it raised enough material-compatibility concerns that I would not make it a standard part of my basement routine.
If I ever repeated the idea, I’d do it only as a brief spot test on a non-delicate surface, and even then with fewer drops of oil and much better ventilation. For actual September basement dampness, I’d put my money into a $10 hygrometer, a well-maintained dehumidifier, fresh caulk where needed, and a good inspection of drainage outside. Cinnamon belongs in my apple crisp, my chili, and the occasional Moroccan-inspired braise. On my basement window seals, it was interesting, but not exactly transformative.
