There is something mighty comforting about a pan of warm little sandwiches coming out of the oven when the air turns crisp and folks start gathering close. This is the kind of easy supper or party tray that reminds me of church basements, football Saturdays, and cool evenings when everybody wanders into the kitchen because the buttery smell tells them something good is on the way. With just a handful of ingredients and hardly any fuss, it is a dependable recipe to keep tucked away for family nights, potlucks, and bonfires alike.
Serve these warm with a bowl of tomato soup, a crunchy dill pickle on the side, or a simple tray of potato chips and fresh-cut vegetables if you are feeding a crowd. For fall get-togethers, I also like them with baked beans, coleslaw, or a fruit salad to balance the richness, and they go especially well with hot cider, iced tea, or a cold bottle of beer for the grown-ups.
Southern 4-Ingredient Ham and Cheese Sliders
Servings: 12 sliders
Ingredients
12 Hawaiian sweet rolls
Directions
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish or similar casserole dish.
2. Without pulling the rolls apart, slice the whole slab of Hawaiian sweet rolls in half horizontally, keeping the tops and bottoms intact as one piece.
3. Set the bottom half into the baking dish, then layer the ham evenly over the rolls. Lay the Swiss cheese slices across the ham so the filling covers the whole slab, then place the top half of the rolls back on.
4. Pour the melted butter evenly over the tops, letting it run down into the seams and edges so the rolls can soak up all that flavor.
5. Cover the dish loosely with foil and bake for 10 minutes, until the cheese is fully melted through the middle.
6. Remove the foil and bake 5 to 8 minutes more, until the tops are golden and lightly crisp. Watch closely, since the sweet rolls brown quickly.
7. Let the sliders rest for 5 minutes, then cut along the seams and serve warm.
Variations & Tips
Keep the bottoms from getting soggy: Pat the deli ham dry with paper towels before layering it on the rolls. Even a little extra moisture can make the bottoms too soft while the tops brown nicely.
Make-ahead tip: You can assemble the sliders a few hours ahead, cover the dish, and refrigerate it. Wait to pour on the melted butter until just before baking for the best texture.
Cheese swap: If Swiss is not your favorite, provolone or mozzarella will melt beautifully too. You will still get that cozy, stretchy center, just with a milder flavor.
Crowd-size variation: For a larger gathering, make a double batch in two pans instead of overfilling one. That way the sliders heat evenly and every top gets nicely browned.
Serving tip: These are best served warm from the oven, when the cheese is soft and the tops are at their glossiest. If they sit awhile, a quick minute or two in a warm oven brings them right back.
