Some recipes earn their place at the table because they feed a crowd, stretch simple ingredients, and make people feel right at home. This one has that small-town breakfast-table magic, the kind of dish that shows up for early church gatherings, holiday mornings, and weekends when you want something warm and filling without standing over the stove the whole time.

This is especially good with fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, or a simple bowl of orange slices to brighten up the rich, savory flavors. If you are serving a bigger breakfast spread, hash browns, crispy bacon, and hot coffee fit right in, and for brunch guests, a little hot sauce on the side lets everyone fix their plate just the way they like it.

Ingredients

1 pound breakfast sausage, browned

1 (16-ounce) can refrigerated biscuits, quartered
2 packets country gravy mix
3 cups milk
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Directions

1. Lightly grease the inside of a slow cooker crock.

2. In a medium bowl or large measuring pitcher, whisk together the country gravy mix and milk until smooth.

3. Scatter half of the quartered biscuit pieces into the bottom of the slow cooker. Top with half of the browned sausage, then pour over about half of the gravy mixture. Sprinkle with half of the cheddar cheese.

4. Repeat the layers with the remaining biscuit pieces, sausage, gravy mixture, and cheddar.

5. Cover and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours, or until the biscuit pieces are cooked through and the casserole is hot and set in the center.

6. Spoon into bowls or onto plates and serve warm.

Variations & Tips

For picky eaters: Use a mild breakfast sausage and leave out any extra black pepper at serving time. If your family likes things extra cheesy, add a little more cheddar over the top during the last 20 minutes of cooking.

Make it heartier: Serve it with scrambled eggs or add a side of hash browns to turn it into an even bigger breakfast. This is a great choice when you need something filling for guests or hungry teenagers.

Watch the biscuit centers: Slow cookers can run a little differently, so check the middle before serving. If the center biscuit pieces still look doughy, cover and cook a bit longer until they are fully cooked through.

Easy prep tip: Brown the sausage the night before and keep it in the refrigerator. In the morning, the casserole comes together quickly, which is especially handy for holiday breakfasts or busy weekends.
