4-Ingredient chipped beef gravy is one of those old-fashioned comfort foods that stretches a few pantry staples into something rich, savory, and deeply satisfying. Often remembered from family breakfasts and simple suppers, this creamy gravy comes together quickly in a skillet and is especially handy when you need a warm meal without much fuss. Served over toast, biscuits, or potatoes, it has that cozy, from-scratch feel that makes everybody hover near the stove waiting for a spoonful.

This gravy is wonderful spooned over toasted sandwich bread, split biscuits, English muffins, hash browns, or creamy mashed potatoes. For a fuller meal, I like to add scrambled eggs, sliced tomatoes, or simple fruit on the side to balance the richness. If you're serving a crowd at breakfast or brunch, a big skillet of this gravy alongside crisp bacon and hot coffee makes the table feel extra special.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 1/2 cups cold milk
1 jar (2 1/2 ounces) dried beef, sliced into ribbons

Directions

1. Slice the dried beef into thin ribbons if it is not already cut. Set the milk nearby so everything is ready to go once the skillet heats up.

2. Place the skillet over medium heat and melt the butter. Sprinkle in the flour and stir for about 1 minute to make a smooth paste, without letting it brown.

3. Slowly whisk in the cold milk, a little at a time at first, until the mixture is smooth. Continue cooking and stirring until the gravy thickens and begins to bubble gently.

4. Stir in the dried beef ribbons and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, just until the beef is heated through and the gravy is creamy and well combined. Taste before adding any salt, since dried beef is already salty.

5. Spoon the hot chipped beef gravy over toast, biscuits, English muffins, or potatoes, and serve right away.

Variations & Tips

For less salt: If your dried beef tastes especially salty, give it a quick rinse in cool water and pat it dry before slicing. That small step can make the finished gravy much more balanced.

Make it thicker or thinner: For thicker gravy, let it simmer another minute or two while stirring. For thinner gravy, whisk in a splash more milk until it reaches the consistency your family likes best.

Serve it family-style: Keep the gravy warm in the skillet on very low heat and set out toast, biscuits, or baked potatoes so everyone can build their own plate. This is a nice way to handle picky eaters at the table.

Add a little pepper: Even though the four basic ingredients are all you truly need, a light sprinkle of black pepper at the end adds a gentle kick that works well with the creamy sauce.
