When I need an easy party appetizer that feels a little special but doesn’t ask for a long grocery list, this is exactly the kind of recipe I reach for. It has that creamy, savory, seafood-inspired flavor people love in classic takeout appetizers, but it’s tucked into a simple oven-baked bite that works especially well for holidays, game days, or any night when you want something impressive without a lot of effort.

Serve these warm on an appetizer platter with crisp veggies, a light salad, or alongside other finger foods like bacon-wrapped bites and cocktail skewers. They also pair nicely with sparkling water, white wine, or a simple citrusy dipping sauce on the side if you want to dress them up for a party spread.

Ingredients

16 large white mushrooms, stems removed

8 oz cream cheese, softened
6 oz lump crab meat, drained

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly clean the mushrooms, remove the stems, and set the caps open-side up on a baking tray or oven-safe serving dish.

2. In a medium bowl, mix the softened cream cheese and drained lump crab meat until evenly combined and creamy. If you want a smoother filling, mash the mixture a little more as you stir.

3. Spoon the filling into a piping bag or zip-top bag with the corner snipped, then pipe the mixture into each mushroom cap, filling them generously.

4. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until the mushrooms are tender and the filling is hot and lightly golden on top. Let them cool for a few minutes before serving.

Variations & Tips

Add mozzarella: If you want the filling to match the extra-creamy look from the process shot, stir in a small handful of shredded mozzarella. It makes the centers a little stretchier and helps the tops brown nicely.

Prevent soggy mushrooms: If your mushrooms seem extra moist, pat them dry after cleaning and avoid soaking them in water. You can also bake them cap-side down for 5 minutes first, then drain any liquid before filling.

Make-ahead tip: Mix the filling and prep the mushrooms earlier in the day, then stuff and bake just before guests arrive. That’s my favorite way to keep holiday hosting feeling manageable.

Use crab gently: Fold the crab in carefully so you keep some nice pieces throughout the filling. It gives the finished bites a better texture and makes them feel a little more special.
