These oven baked 4-ingredient golden twisted appetizer sticks are the kind of retro party snack that never seems to go out of style. They lean on the reliable charm of store-bought puff pastry and a simple savory filling to create something crisp, buttery, and deeply snackable with very little effort. It is easy to see why a platter like this would become a potluck regular: they bake up beautifully golden, can be served warm or at room temperature, and disappear almost as fast as you can set them down.
Serve these appetizer sticks alongside a bowl of warm marinara, honey mustard, or a simple ranch dip if you want a sauce on the side. They also fit nicely onto a party spread with raw vegetables, olives, cheese cubes, deviled eggs, or a big tossed salad for a casual lunch. For drinks, sparkling water, iced tea, light beer, or a crisp white wine all pair well with the buttery pastry.
Oven Baked 4-Ingredient Golden Twisted Appetizer Sticks
Servings: 16 appetizer sticks
Ingredients
1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
1 cup finely shredded sharp cheddar cheese
4 ounces deli ham, very finely chopped
1 large egg, beaten
Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Lightly flour your work surface and unfold the puff pastry sheet.
2. Scatter the cheddar evenly over one half of the pastry, then spread the finely chopped ham over the cheese. Brush the bare half lightly with some of the beaten egg.
3. Fold the bare half of pastry over the filling and press gently to seal. Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to slice the pastry into 16 even strips.
4. Pick up each strip, twist it several times, and place it on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one. Brush the tops with the remaining beaten egg.
5. Bake for 16 to 20 minutes, until puffed and deep golden brown. Let them cool for 5 minutes before transferring to a serving platter.
6. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Variations & Tips
Cheese swap: Sharp cheddar gives these sticks a nice punch, but Swiss, pepper jack, or smoked gouda also work well. Choose a cheese that melts smoothly and has enough flavor to stand up to the buttery pastry.
Keep the pastry cold: If the puff pastry becomes too soft while you work, slide it into the refrigerator for 10 minutes before twisting. Cold pastry holds its shape better and gives you more distinct flaky layers after baking.
Try a different filling: Finely chopped cooked bacon, salami, or even a spoonful of well-drained pesto can replace the ham for a different flavor profile. Just keep fillings fairly dry so the pastry stays crisp.
Make-ahead tip: You can assemble and twist the sticks a few hours ahead, refrigerate them on the baking sheet, and brush with egg just before baking. This is especially useful when you are getting ready for a party or potluck.
