When I need a playful Halloween dessert that looks festive without turning into an all-evening project, I like to lean on simple pantry staples and an easy baked custard-style treat. Using whole eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, and candy corn-inspired colors, this oven-baked dessert delivers a creamy, sliceable confection with classic fall flavor and a fun holiday look that feels right at home on a weeknight or at a casual Halloween party.
This dessert is great served chilled or lightly warm with a spoonful of whipped cream, a drizzle of caramel sauce, or a few extra Halloween sprinkles on top. For a party spread, pair it with hot apple cider, coffee, or spiced tea, and add a plate of sliced apples or shortbread cookies alongside for a simple, festive finish.
5-Ingredient Oven-Baked Halloween Custard Bars
Servings: 8
Ingredients
6 large eggs
2 cups whole milk
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Orange and yellow food coloring
Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 325°F and lightly grease an 8x8-inch baking dish or line it with parchment for easier serving later.
2. Place the eggs in a saucepan, cover with water, and bring to a gentle boil. Turn off the heat, cover, let sit for 12 minutes, then cool the eggs in ice water, peel them, and set aside.
3. In a blender, combine the peeled eggs, milk, sugar, and vanilla. Blend until completely smooth and creamy.
4. Divide the mixture into three bowls. Leave one bowl plain, tint one bowl yellow, and tint one bowl orange to create candy-corn-inspired layers.
5. Pour the orange layer into the prepared dish, then gently add the yellow layer, and finish with the plain layer. Set the baking dish into a larger roasting pan and add hot water halfway up the sides to make a water bath.
6. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the center is just set with a slight jiggle. Cool completely, then chill for at least 2 hours before slicing into bars and serving.
Variations & Tips
Add a topping: A little whipped cream, orange sanding sugar, or a light caramel drizzle makes these bars feel more dessert-like if you want a sweeter finish for a Halloween party.
Make it ahead: This is a great prep-ahead dessert for a busy workweek because it slices more cleanly after chilling overnight. I like making it the evening before and letting it rest in the fridge until serving time.
Try a smoother texture: For an extra silky custard, strain the blended mixture through a fine-mesh sieve before dividing and coloring it. That small step can make a big difference in the final texture.
Change the colors: If candy corn isn’t your thing, use purple and green for a different Halloween look. The flavor stays the same, but the presentation can match the rest of your party table.
