Southern cheddar straws are one of those simple little party bites that disappear faster than just about anything else on the table. With only four ingredients, these crisp, cheesy twists come together with very little fuss, but they still have that classic Southern charm that makes them feel special for tailgates, holiday snack boards, and neighborly get-togethers.
Serve these golden cheddar straws alongside pimento cheese, olives, pickle spears, or a bowl of warm soup for a cozy lunch. They also fit right in on a tailgate spread with deviled eggs, ham sliders, and sweet tea, and they pair especially well with a cold glass of lemonade or a simple sparkling drink.
Southern 4-Ingredient Golden Cheddar Straws
Servings: 8
Ingredients
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
8 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and shredded cheddar together until well combined and creamy.
3. Add the flour and salt, then mix until a soft dough forms. If needed, use your hands to bring it together gently.
4. Transfer the dough to a piping bag or cookie press fitted with a star tip. Pipe long strips onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between them.
5. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the straws are golden around the edges and set. Let them cool on the pan for a few minutes, then transfer to a serving tray.
Variations & Tips
Spicy Tailgate Version: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a little smoked paprika to the dough if your crowd likes a bit of heat. It gives these cheddar straws a bolder snack-table flavor without changing the easy method.
Kid-Friendly Shape: If piping long straws feels fussy, roll small pieces of dough into short sticks instead. They may look a little more rustic, but they bake up just as tasty and are easy for little hands to grab.
Cheese Tip: Use sharp cheddar for the best flavor, and shred it yourself if you can. Freshly shredded cheese melts more smoothly into the dough and helps create that rich, cheesy bite.
Make-Ahead Tip: You can prepare the dough a day ahead and keep it wrapped in the refrigerator. Let it soften slightly before piping so the dough moves through the tip more easily.
Crispness Tip: For the best texture, store cooled cheddar straws in an airtight container at room temperature. If they soften a bit the next day, a few minutes in a low oven will help bring back their crunch.
