When the pantry looks a little bare but you still want something sweet and homey to set on the table, this simple cocoa dessert is the kind of old-fashioned trick worth keeping. It turns a packet of dry hot cocoa mix and two everyday kitchen staples into a soft, pudding-like baked treat with a rich chocolate flavor and a comforting spoon-dessert texture. It feels a little like the budget-wise desserts many Midwestern home cooks have long relied on, where a humble shortcut and a warm oven could make something mighty satisfying.
This dessert is lovely served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a spoonful of whipped cream, or a glass of cold milk on the side. If you are putting it out after supper, fresh berries or sliced bananas make a nice contrast to the cocoa richness, and a dusting of powdered sugar can dress it up enough for company.
3-Ingredient Oven Baked Cocoa Dessert
Servings: 6
Ingredients
1 cup dry hot cocoa powder mix
2 large eggs
2 cups whole milk
Directions
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and lightly grease a medium oven-safe ceramic casserole dish.
2. Pour the dry hot cocoa powder mix into the casserole dish. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until smooth.
3. Slowly pour the milk and egg mixture over the cocoa powder, then whisk right in the dish or stir gently until the mixture is fully combined and smooth.
4. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the edges are set and the center still has a soft, pudding-like wobble.
5. Let the dessert rest for 10 minutes before spooning into bowls and serving warm.
Variations & Tips
Make it richer: If you want a fuller, deeper flavor, use whole milk or even half-and-half for part of the milk. The texture will bake up softer and more custard-like.
Add a little pantry flavor: A splash of vanilla extract or a pinch of cinnamon stirs in nicely if you do not mind stepping beyond the strict three-ingredient version. Either one gives the dessert a more old-fashioned baked-pudding character.
Watch the bake time closely: This dessert is best when the middle is still a bit soft. If it bakes too long, it can lose that spoonable texture and become firmer than intended.
Serve it your own way: For a simpler everyday finish, eat it warm straight from the dish. For company, top each serving with whipped cream, berries, or chopped toasted nuts for a little contrast in flavor and texture.
