Southern 3-ingredient buttery cheese squares are the kind of old-school potluck bake that proves simple pantry staples can still steal the table. With a rich, tender biscuit-like base and plenty of melted cheese held together by butter, this recipe leans into the practical Southern tradition of turning a few affordable ingredients into something warm, savory, and deeply crowd-pleasing. It is especially useful when you need a quick appetizer, snack, or side dish without a long prep list.
Serve these squares warm as a party bite alongside chili, soup, or a big pot of beans, or set them out with pickles, hot sauce, and a crisp slaw for contrast. They also fit nicely on a brunch table next to eggs and fruit, and for casual gatherings they pair well with smoked sausage, roasted vegetables, or a simple green salad to balance the buttery richness.
Southern 3-Ingredient Buttery Cheese Squares
Servings: 12 squares
Ingredients
2 cups self-rising flour
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup unsalted butter, melted
Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease an 8-inch square baking dish or small casserole dish.
2. In a medium mixing bowl, stir together the self-rising flour and shredded cheddar cheese until the cheese is evenly coated in flour.
3. Pour in the melted butter and mix just until a thick, slightly sticky dough forms with no dry pockets of flour remaining.
4. Press the dough evenly into the prepared baking dish, smoothing the top so it bakes into neat squares.
5. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the top is deeply golden and the edges are crisp and bubbling.
6. Let the cheese squares rest for 10 minutes, then cut into 12 squares and serve warm.
Variations & Tips
Use extra-sharp cheddar: If you want a more pronounced cheese flavor, choose extra-sharp cheddar rather than mild. Because the ingredient list is so short, the flavor of the cheese makes a noticeable difference in the finished squares.
Pan size matters: An 8-inch square dish gives you thicker, softer-centered squares. If you spread the mixture in a slightly larger dish, the bars will bake thinner and develop more crisp edge surface.
Do not overmix: Once the butter is added, stir only until the dough comes together. Overworking it can make the texture heavier instead of tender.
Let them rest before cutting: A short cooling period helps the butter settle and the cheese firm up slightly, so the squares slice more cleanly and hold their shape better for serving.
Add a savory accent: Even though the classic version is just three ingredients, a pinch of cayenne, a spoonful of chopped jalapeños, or a sprinkle of garlic powder can be folded in if you want a little more personality without changing the spirit of the recipe.
