There is something mighty comforting about a simple baked dessert that comes together with almost no fuss, especially when the weather turns cool and folks start craving a little sweetness after supper. This Halloween-style baked strawberry treat leans on the magic of pantry baking: frozen whole strawberries go straight into the dish, then get topped with a handful of basic ingredients that bake into a jammy, cobbler-like dessert with a cozy old-fashioned feel. It is the sort of recipe a country cook keeps close at hand for school nights, church suppers, and those evenings when children come in from the cold asking what smells so good.
Serve this warm with vanilla ice cream, a spoonful of whipped cream, or a drizzle of heavy cream if you want something extra homey. For a Halloween table, set it out with black coffee, hot cider, or mugs of cocoa, and if you are feeding a crowd, a platter of crisp butter cookies or a bowl of roasted pecans on the side makes it feel especially generous.
5-Ingredient Oven Baked Halloween Strawberry Dessert
Servings: 8
Ingredients
1 (32-ounce) bag frozen whole strawberries
1 box yellow cake mix
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup chopped pecans
Directions
1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease a 9x13-inch glass baking dish.
2. Pour the frozen whole strawberries straight into the prepared baking dish and spread them into an even layer.
3. Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the strawberries, covering the fruit from edge to edge.
4. Drizzle the melted butter as evenly as you can over the cake mix, then sprinkle the cinnamon and chopped pecans across the top.
5. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, until the fruit is bubbly around the edges and the topping is golden brown. Let it rest for 10 to 15 minutes before serving so the juices can settle a bit.
Variations & Tips
For a spookier Halloween touch: A pinch of orange zest mixed into the cake topping gives the dessert a bright autumn note, and a light dusting of orange and black sprinkles after baking can make it party-ready once it has cooled slightly.
For a softer topping: If you prefer less crunch, cover the dish loosely with foil for the first 25 minutes of baking, then uncover it so the top can finish browning without drying out.
Nut-free version: Leave out the pecans and add a little extra cinnamon. The dessert will still bake up beautifully with a sweet, buttery crust over the berries.
Serving tip: This dessert is at its best served warm, not piping hot. That short resting time helps the strawberry juices thicken and makes each spoonful easier to serve.
Pantry note: If your strawberries are very tart, you can add 2 tablespoons of brown sugar over the fruit before the cake mix. It is not necessary for most bags, but it is a handy trick when berries are especially sharp.
