When I need a low-effort dessert that still feels like a treat, this 4-ingredient oven baked devil's food dessert is exactly the kind of recipe I reach for. It has that classic dump-and-bake ease busy weeknights call for, using dry unmixed devil's food cake powder right in the baking dish to create a rich, chocolatey dessert with almost no prep. It is the sort of old-school shortcut bake that feels right at home at potlucks, family dinners, or anytime you want something warm and sweet without pulling out every bowl in the kitchen.
This dessert is especially good served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a spoonful of whipped cream so the cool, creamy topping melts into the chocolate. If you want to dress it up a little more, fresh strawberries, raspberries, or a drizzle of chocolate syrup pair really nicely with the deep cocoa flavor. For coffee lovers, a hot cup of coffee or a cold glass of milk makes it even better.
4-Ingredient Oven Baked Devil's Food Dessert
Servings: 8
Ingredients
1 box devil's food cake mix, dry and unmixed
1 can cherry pie filling, about 21 ounces
1 cup lemon-lime soda
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease an oven-safe metal baking dish.
2. Spread the cherry pie filling evenly across the bottom of the baking dish.
3. Sprinkle the dry devil's food cake mix evenly over the pie filling, making a full layer without stirring.
4. Pour the lemon-lime soda slowly over the top, then drizzle the melted butter as evenly as possible across the cake mix. Do not stir.
5. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until the top looks set and slightly crackly and the cherry filling is bubbling around the edges.
6. Let the dessert cool for 10 to 15 minutes before scooping and serving warm.
Variations & Tips
Berry Swap: Try strawberry or mixed berry pie filling instead of cherry for a slightly different fruit flavor that still works beautifully with the devil's food cake mix.
Extra Rich Version: If you want an even more decadent finish, serve each portion with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. The warm chocolate and cool topping combination is hard to beat.
Pan Tip: Make sure the butter gets drizzled as evenly as possible so you do not end up with large dry patches of cake mix on top. A few small dry spots are normal, but even coverage helps everything bake up better.
Make It Easy for Potlucks: Bake and serve this right in the same dish. It travels well once slightly cooled, and because it is a scoopable dessert, it is a great option when you need something simple but crowd-pleasing.
Storage Tip: Cover leftovers and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Reheat individual servings in the microwave for a warm dessert that tastes just as comforting the next day.
