There is something mighty satisfying about a dessert that comes together from the plainest pantry shelf staples, and this 4-ingredient oven baked butter cracker dessert is just that sort of treat. It reminds me of the practical Midwestern way of baking, where folks learned to turn what was on hand into something sweet enough to make a regular evening feel special. Dry round butter crackers bake up with a lovely crunch under a buttery brown sugar coating, and the result is a simple old-fashioned dessert that tastes far richer than the short ingredient list lets on.
This sweet cracker dessert is wonderful served warm in little bowls on its own, or paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a proper company-style finish. A spoonful of whipped cream works nicely too, and if you are setting out coffee after supper, this is the kind of crisp, buttery sweet that goes especially well with a hot cup. For a cozy cold-weather table, I also like to serve it alongside stewed apples or a handful of toasted pecans.
4-Ingredient Oven Baked Butter Cracker Dessert
Servings: 6
Ingredients
2 sleeves dry uncooked round butter crackers
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Directions
1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease a rimmed sheet pan or line it with parchment paper for easier cleanup.
2. Scatter the round butter crackers across the sheet pan in an even layer, overlapping just a little here and there.
3. In a small bowl, stir together the melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until well combined and syrupy.
4. Drizzle the butter mixture all over the crackers, using a spoon or spatula to spread it around so most of the crackers get a bit of the coating.
5. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until the sugar is bubbling and the crackers are golden and caramelized around the edges.
6. Let the dessert cool for 10 minutes so the coating can set slightly, then serve warm as is or break it into pieces for a crunchy, toffee-like dessert.
Variations & Tips
Nutty version: Sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts over the crackers before baking if you want a little extra crunch and a flavor that leans closer to classic Southern praline sweets.
Spiced version: Add a pinch of nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice along with the cinnamon for a warmer flavor that feels especially nice in fall and through the holidays.
Watch the pan: Because brown sugar and butter can turn from bubbling to overly dark in a hurry, start checking at the 12-minute mark. You want the crackers crisp and the topping caramelized, not scorched.
Best way to serve: This dessert is at its finest the day it is made, while the coating is still crisp and fragrant. If you have leftovers, store them tightly covered and refresh them for a few minutes in a low oven.
