When I know a parade, fireworks, or a neighborhood get-together is going to eat up the whole evening, this kind of simple roasted supper is exactly what I lean on. A three-ingredient dinner keeps prep light, cleanup manageable, and the oven does most of the work while I handle the rest of the day. This version is all about a savory protein baked with a sweet-tangy glaze until glossy and caramelized, giving you a dependable main dish that feels festive without adding stress.
Serve this with easy summer sides that can be made ahead, like potato salad, buttered corn, baked beans, watermelon, or a crisp green salad. If you want to keep the patriotic cookout theme going, add red fruit, a creamy slaw, and something cool to drink so dinner feels complete even if everyone is eating on the go before the festivities start.
3-Ingredient Patriotic Parade Suppertime
Servings: 4
Ingredients
2 pounds unidentifiable roasting protein
1 cup barbecue sauce
1 packet dry onion soup mix
Directions
1. Preheat your oven to 375°F and lightly grease a ceramic baking dish large enough to hold the protein in a single layer.
2. Place the protein in the baking dish. In a small bowl, stir together the barbecue sauce and dry onion soup mix until well combined, then spread the mixture all over the top and sides.
3. Bake uncovered for 50 to 70 minutes, or until the protein is fully cooked through and the glaze is bubbling and caramelized. If the top starts to darken too quickly, loosely tent with foil near the end.
4. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving so the juices settle and the glaze thickens slightly. Spoon some of the pan sauce over each portion when serving.
Variations & Tips
Make-ahead tip: You can assemble the baking dish and coat everything with the sauce mixture several hours ahead, then cover and refrigerate until it is time to bake. This is especially helpful on busy holiday afternoons when counter space and time both feel tight.
Sauce swap: If you like a slightly different flavor profile, try using a honey barbecue sauce, smoky barbecue sauce, or a sweet chili-style glaze. Just keep the same basic ratio so the dish stays simple and balanced.
Cooking tip: Since roasting times vary based on the size and shape of the protein, use a thermometer or check for doneness based on the specific item you are cooking. That is the easiest way to avoid overcooking while still getting that sticky, browned finish.
Cleanup shortcut: Lining the baking dish with parchment or spraying it well before adding the ingredients can make cleanup much easier, especially because the glaze gets beautifully caramelized around the edges.
