There is something mighty comforting about a supper that asks so little of you and still comes out tasting like you fussed all afternoon. These four-ingredient oven chicken wings are the kind of plainspoken recipe rural Midwestern cooks have always treasured: dependable, thrifty, and built from what is already on hand. Starting with frozen raw chicken wings means you can pull dinner together straight from the freezer, and with just a few pantry staples, they roast up savory, sticky, and full of old-fashioned weeknight goodness.
Serve these wings with simple sides that can catch all those good pan juices, like roasted potatoes, coleslaw, baked beans, corn on the cob, or a pan of buttery rice. For a game-day supper, I like to set them out with carrot sticks, celery, and a little ranch or blue cheese dressing, while for a family dinner they go just as nicely with macaroni salad or a crisp green salad and warm biscuits.
4-Ingredient Oven Chicken Wings
Servings: 4
Ingredients
2 1/2 pounds frozen raw chicken wings
1/2 cup barbecue sauce
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 packet dry onion soup mix
Directions
1. Preheat your oven to 400°F. Spread the frozen raw chicken wings out in a single layer on a large rimmed baking sheet.
2. Drizzle the olive oil over the wings, then sprinkle the dry onion soup mix evenly across the top. Use your hands or tongs to turn the wings as best you can so the seasoning starts to coat them.
3. Bake for 30 minutes, then remove the pan from the oven and carefully drain off any excess liquid. Turn the wings over so they cook more evenly.
4. Brush or spoon the barbecue sauce over the wings, turning them to coat both sides. Return the pan to the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes more, until the wings are cooked through, browned around the edges, and glazed.
5. Let the wings rest for 5 minutes before serving. Pile them onto a platter or serve straight from the sheet pan while they are hot.
Variations & Tips
For crispier wings: If you like a little more color and crisp at the edges, bake the wings on a wire rack set over the sheet pan after the first draining step. You can also broil them for 2 to 3 minutes at the end, watching closely so the sauce does not burn.
For a sweeter finish: Use a honey barbecue sauce if your family likes that old-fashioned sweet-and-smoky flavor. It gives the wings a shinier glaze and pairs especially well with slaw and cornbread.
For easier cleanup: Line the sheet pan with heavy-duty foil or parchment before adding the wings. Since frozen wings release a fair bit of liquid before they start roasting properly, that little step saves plenty of scrubbing later on.
For food safety: Always cook chicken wings until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F at the thickest part. Because they begin frozen, the exact roasting time can vary a bit depending on the size of the wings and how crowded the pan is.
