Slow cooker pork shoulder steaks are the kind of supper that makes a busy day feel manageable, because you can layer a few simple ingredients into the crock, walk away, and come back to tender, savory meat with plenty of rich sauce. Pork shoulder is a budget-friendly cut that does especially well with low, slow cooking, and this five-ingredient version keeps things easy while still delivering that hearty, home-cooked flavor families love.
Serve these pork shoulder steaks over mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, or fluffy white rice so none of the sauce goes to waste. On the side, simple green beans, roasted carrots, corn, or a crisp salad balance the richness nicely, and warm dinner rolls are always welcome at the table for soaking up every last bit.
5-Ingredient Slow Cooker Pork Shoulder Steaks
Servings: 4 to 6
Ingredients
4 raw pork shoulder steaks, about 2 1/2 to 3 pounds total
1 ounce dry ranch seasoning mix
1 ounce brown gravy mix
1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
Directions
1. Place the raw pork shoulder steaks in the bottom of the slow cooker in an even layer.
2. Scatter the sliced onion over the pork, then sprinkle the ranch seasoning mix and brown gravy mix evenly across the top.
3. Pour the chicken broth around and over the pork, cover, and cook on low for 7 to 8 hours or on high for 4 to 5 hours, until the pork is very tender.
4. Carefully remove the lid, spoon some of the cooking liquid over the pork, and let the meat rest in the cooker for 5 minutes before serving.
5. Serve the pork shoulder steaks hot with the onions and plenty of the savory gravy spooned over the top.
Variations & Tips
For extra onion flavor: Add a second sliced onion if your family loves a sweeter, richer gravy. The extra onion cooks down beautifully and stretches the sauce a bit more.
For picky eaters: Skip serving the visible onions on top and just spoon the smooth gravy over the pork. The onion flavor will still be there, but the texture will be much easier for some kids and adults.
To thicken the gravy: If you want a thicker sauce, remove the cooked pork and whisk 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 1 tablespoon cold water, then stir it into the hot liquid in the slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for about 10 to 15 minutes until slightly thickened.
Make it a full meal: Serve the pork over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles to turn the cooking liquid into part of the main dish. This is one of my favorite ways to make a simple slow cooker supper feel especially cozy and filling.
Storage tip: Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days in a covered container. Reheat gently with a splash of broth or water so the pork stays moist and tender.
